Tasting notes

Reviewed by: Antonio Galloni
The 1999 Brut Rose Cuvee Louise is also rather light in color, but here the wine’s candied, super-ripe notes play a more central role in its balance. The 1999 is made in a more overt, fruit-driven style that shows quite a bit of richness but lacks the sheer verve of the 2000. Ultimately the 1999 comes across as heavy and excessively sweet. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2013. This large, venerable estate makes a wide range of wines, the best of which is the Cuvee Louise. The estate does not disclose disgorgement dates, but in general the wines receive six to nine months on the cork prior to be being released. Importer: Vranken Pommery America, New York, NY; tel. About the Producer
Located in the heart of the French Champagne region of Reims, Champagne Pommery is the largest winery in the heart of Reims, covering 50 hectares. Champagne Pommery was founded in 1836. Like many legendary champagne houses, the history of the estate is linked to a widow, the famous Madame Louise. Originally named Jeanne Alexandrine Louise Melin, the young lady became a widow in 1858 and, with her two young sons, took on the task of managing the Château de Berry, which her husband had founded. Champagne. She was a woman of great determination and determination in the running of the house, but she was also innovative and passionate about champagne making, and a great lover of art and collecting. Under Madame Louise's leadership, Brane produced the excellent champagnes that established the reputation of Brane Champagne, and in 1874 the first Brane Royal Champagnes were produced, leading the way to a purer, more natural style of champagne that has remained popular ever since. Today, the house is run by the easy-going, young and art-obsessed Mr Vranken. Over the years, it has become a global brand that is sold in more than 90 countries and is considered the best champagne in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Japan and many other countries. Art, quality and innovation are the hallmarks of the estate's heritage and its soul, which has been in place for almost two hundred years. Today, Brane not only maintains many of its traditional Champagne collections, but has also introduced a modern concept with the Four Seasons and POP (Product of Pommery) Champagne collections. The Four Seasons range is a selection of four different styles of champagne, which are suitable for sipping in the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The POP collection is a bold and controversial take on the traditional champagne concept. The name POP echoes the modernity of the brand, and the small 1/4 bottle with a straw is a subversive concept rarely seen in many traditional champagnes, the idea being to make champagne more accessible and easy to drink, especially for the younger generation. When the glamour is taken off, the bottles still contain the same rigorous and outstanding quality of Brane Champagne.
