About the Producer
Borja Pérez Gonzalez is a fourth-generation winemaker from Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, where his family has been making wine since 1927. Growing up in the family winery in La Guancha, he was surrounded by a stunning variety of vineyards in the historic D.O. Ycoden-Daute-Isora. After studying agronomy, Borja worked as a firefighter and race car mechanic before buying the family winery from his father and uncle. In 2011, he launched his own project, Ignios Orígenes, focused on single vineyards showcasing Tenerife’s intriguing local grape varieties: Listán Negro, Baboso Negro, Vijariego Negro, and the rare white Marmajuelo. While discussions of Canary Island wines often highlight local varieties, Borja’s wines stand out for their aromatic exuberance, rich textures, depth of flavor, and sophistication—especially impressive for a young winemaker from a region not traditionally known for sensitive, terroir-driven winemaking. His second label, Artífice (meaning "creator" or "artisan"), pays homage to his grandfather and the growers he collaborates with. The Artífice Tinto, Blanco, and Viduenos wines are stunning regional offerings, blending various small parcels to express the diverse soils, altitudes, and farming styles of Ycoden-Daute-Isora. Borja practices organic farming and embraces natural winemaking techniques, using no additives other than SO₂, and avoiding temperature control, stabilization, clarification (except for natural settling), or fining. White wines undergo a light filtration.
