Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The Chateau Margaux 2007 has a stoic, aristocratic bouquet of blackberry, cranberry leaf, graphite and smoke: very well defined and lifted with tobacco notes developing in the glass. Quintessential Pauillac. The palate has an understated entry with slightly degraded fruit, soft raspberry and cranberry, lovely well-integrated creamy oak with fine delineation and poise towards the finish that fades a little. The mouth is sensual compared to the nose. Tasted January 2011.

A bright garnet core. The nose is more bashful than in previous years, blackberry, and wild hedgerow and again there is something of the sea about it: shellfish or even kelp. The palate is absolutely gorgeous upon the entry with very fine tannins, great finesse and purity. The Cabernet has good degree of ripeness, a slight saltiness in the middle, combined with an undercurrent of forest floor and cedar. On the surface a simple Chateau Margaux comparative to recent vintages, but with patience there are certainly nuances to this wine. The finish is very long, much more linear that the 2006 but perhaps with greater length. Usually Chateau Margaux shows its colours even at this nascent stage, but this time, you will have to wait until after bottling to see the true wine. Look forward to that! Tasted April 2008.

The elegant 2007 Chateau Margaux’s purity, depth of fruit, and overall equilibrium are impressive. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of spring flowers, black currants, and blackberries, a soft, lush, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and delicacy allied to impressive depth, texture, and length. Already drinkable, it should continue to offer exceptional pleasure for 15 or more years.

This will be bottled in June. This has opened up gloriously on the nose, so much so that if I had this blind I would swear it was a Cote de Nuits. Extremely floral, rose petals, small berried fruit, blueberry, touch of maraschino cherry. It is blessed with a sensuous palate, beautifully textured, sweet red cherry fruit, wild strawberry a hint of mocha, the structure only coming through on the finish. Lovely. Tasted April 2009.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Chateau Margaux was just missing a little intensity on the nose compared to the other First Growths: scents of incense and iris, blackberry and tobacco, perhaps just missing the floral nature of other vintages. The palate is well balanced with supple black fruit laced with graphite and tobacco, fully matured but clearly with sufficient substance to last another 15-20 years. It is a capable Château Margaux, although frankly it does not put enough distance between itself and its Margaux peers, yapping at its heels. Tasted February 2017.

Bright, dark red. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, blackberry, spices, flowers, tobacco and sexy sweet oak tones; complex and aristocratic. Then sweet, suave and seamless, with lovely inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy finesse to the flavors of blackberry, cherry and flowers. Finishes long and sweet, with noble tannins for the year. Not a big wine but one of the classiest examples of the vintage.

(87% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot and 2% cabernet franc; 13% alcohol, following a bit of saignee or chaptalization of the must from various plots) Bright red-ruby. Wonderfully floral, pure nose offers blueberry, cherry and violet. Juicy, spicy and classic, with berry, floral and spicy flavors that seem to vibrate in the mouth. This boasts remarkable inner-palate perfume. An extremely subtle and discreet wine with excellent balance, very good but not exceptional density, and lovely lingering perfume. The IPT here is a relatively modest 61 (compared, for example, to 78 in 2005 and 73 in 2003). Pontallier compared this to the estate's 2004-only softer. If it puts on weight in barrel, it should ultimately merit a score at the high end of my range.

About the Producer

Chateau Margaux is located in the village of Margaux, in the Medoc appellation on the left bank of Bordeaux, and was awarded a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Medoc classification, alongside Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour and Château Haut-Brion. It is also known as Chateau Haut-Brion. Château Margaux currently covers a total of 262 hectares, including 99 hectares of vineyards. The red vineyard has an appellation of 87 hectares, of which 82 hectares are planted, while the white vineyard is planted with 12 hectares. The red varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc; the white varieties are Sauvignon Blanc and the vines are on average 45 years old. Since the end of the 1990s, the estate has refused to use pesticides in the vineyards. In addition, only organic fertilisers are used in the vineyard, and deep fertilisation is carried out at regular intervals to improve the soil structure and rejuvenate the soil. During the harvest season, the winery team selects the right time to harvest the grapes by testing and analysing all the indicators and by tasting the grapes themselves. Once the grapes have reached their ideal state of ripeness, they are harvested by a team of over 200 trained harvesters. Once in the winery, the grapes undergo a rigorous selection process before being de-stemmed. Both oak barrels and stainless steel tanks are used to ferment the red grapes, while the white grapes are fermented entirely in oak barrels. After the alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. The red wines are then left to mature in oak barrels for 18-24 months and the whites for 6-8 months. The main wine of the estate, Château Margaux's red wine, is rich and complex, with an elegant and powerful ballet on the tongue, rich and smooth tannins, good balance and a long, fresh finish with excellent ageing potential. It successfully conquered Napoleon Bonaparte, the founder of the First French Empire, and won the hearts of Thomas Jefferson, the founding father of the United States, and Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" of England. In the world of wine criticism, Château Margaux's red wines have also been recognised, with four perfect scores from Robert Parker and many more from other critics with 95 points or more. In recent years, the quality of Château Margaux's red wines has been steady and has maintained a high level of interest in the market.
