Description

Château La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the most renowned vineyards of Pomerol. This historic estate, situated exclusively on the plateau, was named in the 18th century for its position across the localities ‘Petrus’ and ‘La Fleur’. Established in Libourne since 1937, Jean-Pierre Moueix perceived early on the excellent quality of the Pomerol appellation. Château La Fleur-Pétrus was his very first acquisition in 1950. Quickly after, he purchased Château Trotanoy in 1953.

Tasting notes

A blend of 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 la Fleur-Petrus has a medium garnet-purple color and a slightly closed-down nose to begin, soon unfurling to reveal earthy notions of black truffles, mossy tree bark and damp soil, over a core of plum preserves, wild blueberries and redcurrants, plus a fragrant waft of menthol lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate has the most gorgeous, velvety texture with well-knit freshness giving lift to the densely packed black fruit and earthy layers, finishing with a beguiling perfume. Stunning. Give it a good 3-4 years in bottle and drink it over the next 30 years or more.

Composed of 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 la Fleur-Petrus has a medium garnet-purple color and opens softly and quietly with perfumed nuances of violets, potpourri, underbrush and garrigue with a core of warm plums, blueberry compote and raspberry pie plus touches of smoked meats and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate is charged with wonderfully energetic red and black fruits, framed by fine-grained tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing beautifully fragrant.

The 2018 La Fleur-Pétrus is positively rapturous, just as it was from barrel. Mother Nature appears to have taken all the signatures of this site and turned up the volume. Loud. Rich and beautifully layered, La Fleur-Pétrus dazzles with magnificent richness and a finish that is eternal. Blood orange, mint, rose petal, spice and sweet red berry fruit build over time. I can't remember tasting a better young La Fleur-Pétrus. Give it a few years to shed some baby fat. Magnificent.

The 2018 Lafleur-Petrus is a stunning wine. Creamy, ample and generous, the 2018 has it all. Silky tannins and bright floral notes give the 2018 an air of sophistication to play off the rich, textured fruit. As good as the 2018 is on first impression, it is also magically persistent, with an eternal finish and fabulous balance.

The 2018 La Fleur-Pétrus has a wonderful bouquet that exceeds my expectations, featuring black-truffle-infused black fruit and those juniper berries I noticed out of barrel, all beautifully defined and seeming to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. There is a slightly granular texture on the entry, matched with a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious. A pinch of salted licorice appears toward the finish, which might lag behind both Trotanoy and Hosanna in terms of complexity, but delivers impressive persistence.

The 2018 La Fleur-Pétrus has a gorgeous, ravishing bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, black truffle, juniper and bay leaf, all beautifully defined. It is almost decadent, but it is very delineated and in no way seems over-powering. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe and solid tannins, wonderful acidity and pure black, truffle infused fruit. Where it just falls a little short is towards the finish, which does not possess the complexity and sophistication of the 2018 Trotanoy tasted alongside. Maybe an unfair comparison, but it is still bloody good.

About the Producer

Château La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the most renowned vineyards of Pomerol. This historic estate, situated exclusively on the plateau, was named in the 18th century for its position across the localities ‘Petrus’ and ‘La Fleur’. Established in Libourne since 1937, Jean-Pierre Moueix perceived early on the excellent quality of the Pomerol appellation. Château La Fleur-Pétrus was his very first acquisition in 1950. Quickly after, he purchased Château Trotanoy in 1953. The personality of Château La Fleur-Pétrus lies in the careful association of the famous gravel and clay terroirs of the plateau of Pomerol. The vineyard, located at 33 to 38 meters above sea level, draws its identity from the nuances of soil and elevation of each parcel. Those parcels which are dominated by gravel tend to yield wines of great elegance, while those dominated by clay are distinctly velvety, dense, and structured. Château La Fleur-Pétrus is composed predominantly of Merlot, which lends silkiness and generosity to the wine. Cabernet Franc, planted on gravel and fine clay, contributes rigor and complexity, while a small percentage of Petit Verdot, planted on fine gravel, offers a hint of spice to the finish. The wine combines a unique elegance with the generosity and structure typical of the great vineyards of Pomerol. An attentive tasting reveals remarkable refinement, complexity, and a touch of violet.
