Château La Fleur-Pétrus is one of the most renowned vineyards of Pomerol. This historic estate, situated exclusively on the plateau, was named in the 18th century for its position across the localities ‘Petrus’ and ‘La Fleur’. Established in Libourne since 1937, Jean-Pierre Moueix perceived early on the excellent quality of the Pomerol appellation. Château La Fleur-Pétrus was his very first acquisition in 1950. Quickly after, he purchased Château Trotanoy in 1953.

A blend of 92% Merlot, 7.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot, the 2015 la Fleur-Petrus is a little reticent on the nose to begin, offering up beguiling notes of tilled soil, black olives, charcuterie and dried Provence herbs over a core of preserved plums, black cherries and black raspberries with touches of tar and new leather. Full-bodied, rich, plush and seductive in the mouth, it finishes with persistent, slowly revealing earthy/savory layers, which will keep you reaching for another glass.

The 2015 La Fleur Petrus is a blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, having absorbed Château Guillot back in 2012. It has a clean and precise bouquet with ebullient red cherry, blackcurrant and cold stone aromas that are very succinct. There is nothing showy here, but it is very refined and graceful. The palate is very well balanced with succulent ripe tannin, clean and precise, lightly spiced red fruit with outstanding focus and tension on the finish. This La Fleur Petrus has an effortless cool about it. I am sure it will be wondrous once in bottle.

The 2015 la Fleur-Petrus has tightened up since I tasted it in barrel, now a more linear, very focused, not austere but maybe conservative bouquet that may already be shutting up shop after bottling. But there is purity here and wonderful mineralité. The palate is more open: concentrated blackberry and boysenberry fruit, white pepper, clove and a touch of curry leaf. This has substance in spades, enormous depth with a persistent and satisfying finish. This is destined to be a great la Fleur-Petrus.

The 2015 La Fleur-Pétrus is a magical wine. Soaring aromatics, beautifully layered, translucent fruit and exceptional balance are the signatures. Hints of orange peel, white pepper and rose petal add an exotic flair. A wine of total harmony, the 2015 offers superb intensity and structure to play off the natural richness of the year. A dollop of Petit Verdot rounds out the blend. The 2015 is like a full-on orchestra where all the instruments are clearly heard but also come together in unison to create a wall of sound that is overwhelming in its beauty.

The 2015 La Fleur-Pétrus exudes richness and concentration. Iron, savory herbs, white pepper and mint open up first, followed by intense, pungent tannins that extend the mid-palate into the finish and give the wine its shape. Unctuous and rich, but with good aromatic intensity and plenty of structure, the 2015 is likely to require quite a few years to fully come together. The blend is 92% Merlot, 7.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot.

The 2015 La Fleur-Pétrus has a very intense bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, truffle and smoke, quite decadent and yet retaining satisfying delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red fruit, gentle grip with a dash of white pepper toward the persistent finish. This is suave and sophisticated - superb. Established in Libourne since 1937, Jean-Pierre Moueix perceived early on the excellent quality of the Pomerol appellation. Château La Fleur-Pétrus was his very first acquisition in 1950. Quickly after, he purchased Château Trotanoy in 1953. The personality of Château La Fleur-Pétrus lies in the careful association of the famous gravel and clay terroirs of the plateau of Pomerol. The vineyard, located at 33 to 38 meters above sea level, draws its identity from the nuances of soil and elevation of each parcel. Those parcels which are dominated by gravel tend to yield wines of great elegance, while those dominated by clay are distinctly velvety, dense, and structured. Château La Fleur-Pétrus is composed predominantly of Merlot, which lends silkiness and generosity to the wine. Cabernet Franc, planted on gravel and fine clay, contributes rigor and complexity, while a small percentage of Petit Verdot, planted on fine gravel, offers a hint of spice to the finish. The wine combines a unique elegance with the generosity and structure typical of the great vineyards of Pomerol. An attentive tasting reveals remarkable refinement, complexity, and a touch of violet.
