Tasting notes

Tasted at Chateau Phelan-Segur. Showing better than a year ago, it nevertheless is completely closed on the nose like many wines of this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, good acidity, fresh with dense black toasty fruit towards the grippy, graphite-tinged finish. Drink 2013-2020. Tasted March 2011.

Tasted blind at Southwold ’06 Bordeaux tasting. This is rather green on the austere, tobacco-scented nose with what seems like under-ripe fruit entering the vat. Rather lean and one-dimensional. The palate is medium-bodied, softer tannins, prominent new oak with blackberry, cedar, tobacco and a touch of graphite towards the austere finish. This is a bit ephemeral compared to others. Tasted January 2010.

Very little on the earthy, tobacco-scented nose, the oak just a little aggressive at this stage. The palate is quite austere with dusty black fruits, smoke and cigar box. Rather stand-offish with a very linear, stoic tobacco infused finish. It has good weight, but it needs to loosen up after bottling as it is too austere. Tasted February 2008.

A fine, dense cedary nose with tobacco and cedar. The medium-bodied palate has good acidity, but is rather hollow on the mid-palate. Notes of dusty black fruit, tobacco and an underlying greenness, lean on the finish. Disappointing – I hope this improves by the time of bottling. Tasted April 2007.

A very good effort from this estate, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2006 reveals sweet, smoky black currant fruit along with a hint of crushed rocks which provides a distinctive minerality. Round, ripe, and medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin, it can be consumed over the next decade.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners' horizontal, the The 2006 Phelan-Segur showed a little more oak on the nose compared to its peers, though it remains detailed with dried blood infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, saline in the mouth with moderate density, a gentle grip towards the graphite-tinged finish. Drink now and over the next 4-5 years. Tasted April 2016.
About the Producer
Chateau Phelan Segur is one of the wineries in the Saint-Estephe region of Bordeaux, France, and a member of the Union Des Grands Crus De Bordeaux. Since the beginning of the 19th century, Château Fragrance, located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, has commanded majestic views over the Gironde. Irishman Bernard Phelan created this winery by merging two vineyards, Clos de Garramey and Domaine Segur. Later, Bernard's son Frank expanded the industry and changed the name of the winery to "Flying Dragon Family Winery" in the early 20th century. Under the careful care of the owner, the Fragrance Family Winery is famous for its elegant, delicate and mild style wines. In 1985, the Gardinier family bought the winery and it has been in operation ever since. The current vineyard area of Fragrance Saga Winery is 70 hectares, of which 55% of the land is used for Cabernet Sauvignon (Cabernet Sauvignon) grapes, 43% of the land is used to cultivate Merlot (Merlot) grapes, 1% of the land It is used to cultivate Petit Verdot, and 1% of the land is used to cultivate Cabernet Franc grapes. When the grapes reach the ideal ripeness, the winery will pick them manually. After picking, the grapes are screened, peeled, and then fermented in the traditional way. The fermented wine is then aged for 16-18 months in 60% new French oak barrels before being bottled in the winery. The Fragrance family winery produces three dry red wines, namely the Frank Phelan brand and the Fragrance family Bernie dry red wine (La Croix), which is mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon from better vineyards. Bonis, Saint-Estephe, France), the current average annual production is 200,000 bottles.
