Tasting notes

There is a slight dustiness on the nose to this Phelan-Segur with earth, leather, some herbaceous notes in the background. Moderate vigour. The palate is quite pointed on the entry with some soy and pain grille notes, nicely balanced but not complex, leading to a dry finish with just a hint of burnt honey. Drink now-2018. Tasted March 2011.

An attractive, very classic Pauillac style nose with cedar, tobacco and blackberry. Very good delineation. Full-bodied palate, firm tannins, good backbone with toasty black fruits on the ripe finish. Good length and cohesion. A bit chunky but full of charm. Tasted October 2007.

This is the finest Phelan Segur I have tasted since the 1990. Deep ruby/purple, with a sweet nose of mulberries and cassis intermixed with licorice and earth, this medium-bodied offering exhibits sweet tannin, good purity, and nice texture as well as length. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012.

First tasted in July 2002 at the chateau where it had green stalky nose. Savory notes with some pencil-lead and tobacco. Good balance with bitter tannins. Better than the 1999 but still lacks Calon's class and depth. Very good. It improved when tasted at the UGC in November 2003: the nose has become much more feminine: pencil-lead and black fruits. The palate is fine, good definition and acidity with fine concentration. Very fresh and very focused. This shows how much the wine can improve after barrel maturation. Excellent.

Abundant quantities of sweet black cherry and currant fruit are present in this medium-bodied, supple-textured 2001. It should drink well during its first decade of life.

Made in a lovely, soft, seductive style, the dark ruby/plum-tinged 2001 Phelan Segur offers up alluring scents of flowers, cedar, dried herbs, and red as well as black fruits. Medium-bodied and supple-textured, with subtle notes of creamy oak, this is a sexy, mid-weight wine to enjoy over the next 6-7 years.
About the Producer
Chateau Phelan Segur is one of the wineries in the Saint-Estephe region of Bordeaux, France, and a member of the Union Des Grands Crus De Bordeaux. Since the beginning of the 19th century, Château Fragrance, located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, has commanded majestic views over the Gironde. Irishman Bernard Phelan created this winery by merging two vineyards, Clos de Garramey and Domaine Segur. Later, Bernard's son Frank expanded the industry and changed the name of the winery to "Flying Dragon Family Winery" in the early 20th century. Under the careful care of the owner, the Fragrance Family Winery is famous for its elegant, delicate and mild style wines. In 1985, the Gardinier family bought the winery and it has been in operation ever since. The current vineyard area of Fragrance Saga Winery is 70 hectares, of which 55% of the land is used for Cabernet Sauvignon (Cabernet Sauvignon) grapes, 43% of the land is used to cultivate Merlot (Merlot) grapes, 1% of the land It is used to cultivate Petit Verdot, and 1% of the land is used to cultivate Cabernet Franc grapes. When the grapes reach the ideal ripeness, the winery will pick them manually. After picking, the grapes are screened, peeled, and then fermented in the traditional way. The fermented wine is then aged for 16-18 months in 60% new French oak barrels before being bottled in the winery. The Fragrance family winery produces three dry red wines, namely the Frank Phelan brand and the Fragrance family Bernie dry red wine (La Croix), which is mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon from better vineyards. Bonis, Saint-Estephe, France), the current average annual production is 200,000 bottles.
