Tasting notes

Dark crimson with slight aging on rim. A moderately-scented, toasty floral nose. A forward attacking palate but is a little tight . Touched of toffee and plums on finish. Acceptable if a little foursquare. Tasted November 1999.

The 1994 is a very good wine, with a healthy dark ruby color with purple tints, fine ripeness, medium body, good density, some tannin, and an overall sense of balance, extract, and character. The wine is mouthfilling, savory, and ideal for drinking over the next decade. Phelan-Segur has been an immensely popular, well-known estate since the late eighties, turning out one after another top notch wines that were under-valued given how good they were, particularly in vintages such as 1989 and 1990. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

This is probably the finest overachieving, unclassified St.-Estephe chateau. The property made excellent, close to outstanding wines in both 1989 and 1990, a good wine in 1991, and competent wines in 1992 and 1993. The 1994 is a potentially long-lived wine, with an impressive saturated purple color, sweet, jammy cassis aromas, medium body, moderate tannin, and fine ripeness and chewiness in the mouth and finish. It will require 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades.

The 1994 reveals red and blackcurrants, oak, and toast in the nose. Although soft for a wine of this vintage, and lacking some of the mid-palate intensity possessed by the 1993, it is well made, dense, and medium-bodied. Despite light tannin in the finish, this wine should drink well young, and keep for 7-8 years.
About the Producer
Chateau Phelan Segur is one of the wineries in the Saint-Estephe region of Bordeaux, France, and a member of the Union Des Grands Crus De Bordeaux. Since the beginning of the 19th century, Château Fragrance, located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, has commanded majestic views over the Gironde. Irishman Bernard Phelan created this winery by merging two vineyards, Clos de Garramey and Domaine Segur. Later, Bernard's son Frank expanded the industry and changed the name of the winery to "Flying Dragon Family Winery" in the early 20th century. Under the careful care of the owner, the Fragrance Family Winery is famous for its elegant, delicate and mild style wines. In 1985, the Gardinier family bought the winery and it has been in operation ever since. The current vineyard area of Fragrance Saga Winery is 70 hectares, of which 55% of the land is used for Cabernet Sauvignon (Cabernet Sauvignon) grapes, 43% of the land is used to cultivate Merlot (Merlot) grapes, 1% of the land It is used to cultivate Petit Verdot, and 1% of the land is used to cultivate Cabernet Franc grapes. When the grapes reach the ideal ripeness, the winery will pick them manually. After picking, the grapes are screened, peeled, and then fermented in the traditional way. The fermented wine is then aged for 16-18 months in 60% new French oak barrels before being bottled in the winery. The Fragrance family winery produces three dry red wines, namely the Frank Phelan brand and the Fragrance family Bernie dry red wine (La Croix), which is mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon from better vineyards. Bonis, Saint-Estephe, France), the current average annual production is 200,000 bottles.
